What these machines actually do

All of them work by electrolysis: an electric current is passed through water across a proton exchange membrane, splitting some of it and dissolving the resulting hydrogen gas back into the water. The hydrogen concentration is measured in parts per million, and that number is the honest spec to compare across devices — more so than the size of the unit or the price of it.

Because the hydrogen is dissolved rather than reacted, it leaves the water chemically much as it found it. Echo's fixed machines generate hydrogen without shifting pH; the one exception is the Echo Ultimate, which produces alkaline and acidic water as separate selectable outputs because it is built to. Hydrogen also comes out of solution over time, which is why these devices generate on demand instead of storing pre-made water — and why a bottle you fill and forget for a day is not the same product as one you drink from shortly after it cycles.

Where the evidence actually stands

We are going to be straight with you here, because most pages selling this equipment are not.

Molecular hydrogen has a real and growing research literature, and it is genuinely interesting. It is also early. Much of the human work is small, short, and heterogeneous in dose, delivery method and population, and the field has not yet converged on standard protocols. That is a fair description of where things are, not a criticism of the science.

What that means for you: we describe what this equipment does — concentration, format, engineering, service — and we do not tell you what it will do for you. If you want to read the underlying research before you spend anything, that is the correct instinct, and we would rather you did. Anyone promising you specific health outcomes from a water bottle is telling you something the evidence does not currently support.

Which format fits how you live

This is the decision that actually matters. There are two families here.

Portable — hydrogen that travels with you. The Echo Flask is the entry point: a 12 oz bottle that generates on demand from whatever clean water you put in it. The Echo Forty is the same idea in a 40 oz tumbler, for people who found the Flask too small for a full day. Choose these if you are new to hydrogen, if your routine moves around, or if you already drink filtered water and simply want to add hydrogen to it.

Fixed — hydrogen at the kitchen. The Echo H2 is the flexible middle of the range and installs either on the counter or beneath it. The Echo One solves two jobs in one under-counter box — it filters by reverse osmosis first, then infuses — and is the sensible answer if you do not already own an RO system. The Echo Ultimate is the most configurable unit Echo builds, giving four selectable water types from one machine.

Two companions sit alongside the fixed systems. The Echo RO is a tankless four-stage reverse-osmosis system for anyone who wants the filtration half on its own, and the RO/Flow faucet is the dedicated secondary tap that under-counter installations dispense from. A secondary faucet is required for any under-counter install and is not included with the machines — worth knowing before you plan the job rather than after.

Who builds them

Echo Water has been building hydrogen equipment since approximately 2009. They manufacture their own machines rather than badging someone else's, they service them with an in-house technical team, and they back the fixed systems with a ten-year warranty. For equipment that plumbs into a kitchen and is expected to run for a decade, who answers the phone in year six is a specification like any other.

Common questions

Does hydrogen water taste different? No. Molecular hydrogen is odourless and tasteless, and dissolving it does not alter the mineral content of the water.

Do I need reverse osmosis as well? Only if you want it. Hydrogen generation works on any clean water. If you already own an RO system you do not need another; if you do not and want both jobs solved once, the Echo One is the single-box answer.

Can I make it in advance? Not usefully. Hydrogen leaves solution over time, so these devices are built to generate shortly before you drink rather than to store.

How is concentration measured? In parts per million (ppm) of dissolved hydrogen. It is the one number worth comparing directly between devices.

Is there anything on backorder? Yes — and we say so on each product page rather than after you have paid. The Echo H2, Echo RO and Echo Ultimate are currently on backorder with the manufacturer with shipping expected in October 2026. The Flask, the Forty, the Echo One and the RO/Flow faucet are unaffected.

What does shipping cost? Nothing within the continental United States.
